Interview with Polina Myles

– Polina, where did you live before Texas?

Me, my husband and our newborn daughter moved to America during the pandemic in 2020. Before we lived in Prague, where we met with my husband.

– Was Austin your choice, or is it a coincidence?

In 2018, we came to America to choose the state where we want to move. We considered Massachusetts, Florida, California, Texas, Hawaii. For a long time we doubted between Florida and Texas, but we’ve decided that we don’t want to live in conditions of constant hurricanes and tornadoes in Florida.

– Please tell us about your profession and your work.

I am a clinical nutritionist, a functional medicine practitioner. Many people think that I just help people to lose weight. In fact, this is only a part of the requests I work with.

I help adults and children by adjusting nutrition and lifestyle to cope with many modern health problems (allergies, diabetes, gastrointestinal problems, skin rashes, hormonal imbalance, etc.). I work with people who have infertility problems and also the big group of my customers are people who are “overweight” or already at the stage of obesity.

My approach is to find the root cause of the problem, not just to deal with the symptoms.

Which of your projects stand out the most? Why?

A few months ago, my team and I launched an online weight loss project. The project gained popularity very quickly, as people were tired of losing weight on restrictions and calorie deficit. I develop such a menu that participants are never hungry, eat delicious food, do not spend a lot of time cooking, and at the same time lose weight with health benefits.

How are your relations with your homeland? Do you miss any aspects of life at home?

In Russia I have only my parents and a few friends. My parents are in the process of getting a US visa, I hope they will come to visit us in the fall.

The last years before moving to America, I lived in Prague, and I miss this city the most. I really miss the transport system in Prague. It is incredibly convenient.

I still can’t get used to the fact that here in Texas to have a cup of coffee you need to get in the car. In Prague, everything was so close to home, I didn’t have a car there, and I didn’t need one.

– What traditions and habits have you retained from pre-Texan life?

We celebrate here with my family Maslenitsa, Easter, New Year’s Eve. I love to cook, often I make traditional food from my childhood  memories (syrniki, farmer cheese pie, roasted meat in a pot). My husband is an American, so there are many holidays and traditions from two different cultures in our family.

My family is me, my husband, daughter and son. My daughter is 3, my son is 8 months old. My husband’s parents live here in Texas, with whom we get along well and spend a lot of time. The husband is engaged in volunteer work in the administration of Williamson County, in particular the audit of schools.

– What are your favorite books and films?

I really love history, historical books and movies. Recently, we watched the first ever TV series filmed entirely on a donation. It’s called Chosen. A film adaptation of the life of Jesus Christ. So far, 3 seasons have been released. I definitely recommend it to everyone (you don’t have to practice any religion to enjoy this work).
