Interview with Lika Borovinskikh

– Lika, please tell us your story in America. Where did you study and work before Texas?

I moved to the USA in 2010. I began my American journey with the Big Apple – New York. It was here that I first time asked myself the question: “Who do I want to be?” And as it is said in the famous book, “And then Ostap began.” Over the eight years of my life in New York, I managed to learn and work: as a fitness trainer, hairdresser, manager, masseur, theta healer, beauty industry specialist, and even start studying as a nurse.

Between all this, in 2014, I tried to live in Miami. However, after nine months there I returned to my beloved New York again. On January 2, 2019, I got behind the wheel of my car and decided to drive through the whole country to California. I did not plan to stay there, but I did not return to New York and stayed in Los Angeles. After a while, I met my husband and moved to the Bay Area. Soon my husband received a lucrative job offer, and in May 2020, during Covid, we found ourselves in Texas.

– Please tell us about your profession and your work.

At this point, I found something I get tremendous pleasure from, and I can do it all my free time, which I do not have enough of. It is photography. Since I was a child, I have loved photography. At the age of 10, I had my first camera. And now I want to do it professionally. I prefer family lifestyle photography, couples, and maybe later childbirth.

What is photography for me? I want to leave my mark. Photos taken by me, my vision of people is my mark. Therefore, I will be pleased to capture the beautiful moments of the families of Austin and the surrounding area! Welcome to my photo sessions!

– Which of your projects stand out the most, and why?

Each photo session is unique, as each family is unique. I always try to bring the characters to emotions because it is emotions that will make you remember the moments. A photo session of one family was very bright for me, where I photographed the mother and her three sons. Everyone very quickly picked up and implemented my ideas. They managed to get into the refrigerator, fool around with kitchen utensils, get smeared with shaving foam, pretend to shave, and much more. It was a lot of fun.

– What traditions and habits did you keep from the pre-Texas life?

I have always and everywhere been involved in sports for as long as I can remember, and Texas was no exception. We also keep the family tradition of a daily joint dinner.

– Please tell us about your family.

I have a wonderful husband, a one-year-old son, and two beautiful corgi dogs (mother and daughter). My husband is an excellent cook, and I am very lucky. I cook extremely rarely. We love to travel, joke around and generally be positive.

– What do you do outside of work? What are your interests and hobbies?

I study French, read books, go in for sports, natural rejuvenation, sometimes draw and play a little piano, travel, hike, art, and learn new interesting things.

– What else would you like to tell about yourself?

I competed at the Arnold Classic competition in the bikini fitness category. It was an exciting experience. Once I went on a water fast for 31 days. I was a vegan for five years and did not drink any alcohol for four of them. I was skydiving on my own without an accompanying guide from behind. It was terrifying but unforgettable!

As I wrote earlier, I crossed all of America from coast to coast. I traveled for ten days, ticking off my dreams – travel points. And during these ten days, I drank only water and did not eat anything.

How is your family involved in the life of the Russian-speaking community in Austin?

I only managed to go to local meetings a couple of times. Of those I attended, I liked the Girls in IT meeting (https://russianaustin.com/novosti/vstrecha-biznes-kluba-devushki-iz-it).

– What are your favorite books and movies?

Books: One Hundred Years of Solitude by Marquez, The Doomed City by the Strugatskys, Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.

It’s more difficult to choose movies. Maybe it is childish, but I love Back to the Future, especially the first two episodes.

– What would you like to wish the Russian-speaking residents of Austin and Texas?

Rain and chill! Peace, health, and happy days.
