Interview: Olga Nechaeva

– Hello, Olga! Can you tell us how your story in the United States began?

Two years ago, our family moved to Austin, Texas. It all started when we won a green card and successfully completed all the interview stages. Then came the time to choose a place to settle, which turned out to be a tough decision. I had spent more than 20 years living in Krasnodar in southern Russia, so a warm climate was one of the main criteria. We wanted a city with a good quality of life, suitable weather, and proximity to the sea. That’s how we ended up choosing Texas and its capital, Austin.

– Where did you study and work before moving to Texas?

By education, I’m a fashion designer, but I never worked in that field. At the age of 23, I was drawn into the nail care industry, and since then, it has been my life’s work. This job has been both my passion and my challenge. There were times of burnout when I wanted to give it all up, but I always came back, realizing it was all for a reason. Every stage of my career made me stronger and brought me to the profession I practice today.

– Please tell us about your work.

Today, I work as a podologist, helping people with various foot and nail issues. These can range from ingrown nails, corns, fungal infections, onycholysis, psoriasis, and other conditions. A podologist doesn’t diagnose, but we play an important role in maintaining foot and nail health, working alongside doctors to achieve the best outcome. Often, it requires time and patience, as such issues aren’t resolved in a single visit. The most memorable cases are working with elderly people and children. Seeing them free from pain and begin to feel relief is a true pleasure. In those moments, I realize my efforts are truly helping, and each positive change is a small victory.

– Do you like Austin?

Getting to know Austin wasn’t easy. This city is like a fine wine – you have to give it time. After a year and a half, I realized that Austin had become my home. I enjoy the nature here, walks in the parks, and kayaking on the Colorado River. In those moments, I truly find peace.

– What traditions have you kept in your family?

Of course, I miss certain things from life back home. I especially miss family and friends who are still in Russia, as well as affordable healthcare and its cost. But we try to maintain the traditions that are important to our family. For example, celebrating New Year’s remains a special event for us, and we want to pass on this tradition to our three-year-old son so he can feel the holiday spirit. I also love Halloween and everything related to it – pumpkin nights, farm visits, and decorated houses that resemble horror movies. Our son particularly loves the lights and bubbles that pop up everywhere this time of year.

– Tell us about your plans.

Right now, I’m actively learning English to feel more confident in everyday life. I attend college classes and take online professional development courses. I plan to travel abroad for further training. Besides work, I adore traveling and experiencing new cultures, architecture, and people.

– What are your favorite books and movies?

One of the books that left a lasting impression on me is Bury Me Behind the Baseboard. As for movies, I enjoy rewatching Friends and the Bridget Jones films.

– What would you like to say to the Russian-speaking community in Austin?

To the Russian-speaking residents of Austin and Texas, I would like to say: don’t give up! The beginning can be challenging, but each day you will see how life gets better. It’s never too late to learn – you can even meet people in their 90s in local colleges. Most importantly, don’t lose yourself, and believe in your strength. You will succeed!”
