Interview with Olga Shisler

– Tell your story in America. Where did you live and work before Texas?

My name is Olga, and I am an immigrant from Kazakhstan. I have been living in the USA for 4.5 years. I lived in Seattle, where I worked in a beauty salon. However, fate brought me to Texas, where I continue to work and pursue my favorite profession.

– How did you end up in Austin?

Moving to Austin was a coincidence for me. I decided to move to another city where living and working would be more comfortable. In addition, Austin is an attractive city with good development opportunities.

– Please tell us about your profession and your work.

My profession is a manicurist. I started doing this business in Astana, where I had my first beauty salon. I am also a teacher with over 20 years of experience. During this time, I have managed to train more than 1500 students, and I feel proud of them when they succeed in their profession. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is being able to inspire and help other people become more confident, attractive, and successful.

– What do you like most about Austin?

First of all, I like the fact that Austin is now in motion and development. It’s great that big companies come to the city, which creates many new jobs and promotes economic growth. Second, one of my favorite places in Austin is the river flowing through the city’s center. It is a great place for walking and relaxing in nature. I also like the warm and friendly atmosphere in Austin.

– What difficulties did you have to face in America?

The language barrier was one of the biggest challenges I faced in the US. So I took English courses and tried communicating with Americans to improve my language. It wasn’t easy, but I could speak some English over time and now feel a little more confident in communicating with people.

Another big challenge I faced was related to medicine. Medical services in America are costly, and I could not afford to turn to doctors whenever I wanted. Later, I decided to subscribe to health insurance to protect myself in case of illness. It helped me feel more confident and calm.

In the US, a lot of time you spent on the road, especially if you live in a small city and work in the center. But, on the other hand, I found a good way to use this time. I listen to audiobooks and podcasts, learn new words, and communicate with my family.

– How are your relations with your homeland? Do you miss any aspects of life in your home country?

I love my homeland Kazakhstan, and I feel nostalgic every time I remember it. I miss my native places, food, customs, and atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else.

– Please tell us about your family.

I have a daughter, mother, sister, and brother. We are very close and always support each other. I am very grateful to them for everything they have done for me and continue to do. Despite the distance, we are always in touch and maintain warm relations. Thanks to the Internet and modern technologies, communication with relatives and friends has become much easier and more accessible. But, of course, this will not replace a personal meeting and communication.

– What else would you like to tell about yourself?

I want to share my thoughts about my love for God and the church. For me, God is the source of peace, love, and hope. I love attending church, where I find support, wisdom, and comfort. The church also allows me to serve others and be the best version of myself. Love for God and the church is an important part of my life and affects every aspect.

I also love traveling, exploring new cities and cultures, sports, dancing, music, animals (I have a French bulldog Nicole, a girl), and interacting with people. I believe life is full of opportunities, and I try to use them to enjoy life and learn something new.

– What do you think is missing in Austin?

I miss more parks and green spaces in Austin. I love spending time in nature, walking in parks, and enjoying the fresh air. Austin has some great parks, but I wish there were more. I also wish there were more arts and cultural activities in Austin. This is what caught my eye for a month of stay.

– What would you like to wish the Russian-speaking residents of Austin and Texas?

Life in America has taught me to appreciate every moment and accept life’s trials as lessons that help me improve. I am grateful for everything that I received in this country! I wish all the people of Austin and Texas to preserve their culture and traditions and open up to new knowledge and opportunities around us. The peaceful sky above your head and the well-being of your families, success in achieving your goals, and realizing the dreams that you are pursuing! No matter how long you’ve lived here or just moved in, I hope Austin is your home of joy and pleasure!
